About Dermot Kennedy
Dermot Kennedy, born 13 December 1991, is an Irish singer-songwriter who has been on the music scene since he was 17. At the time, he was busking to hone his talents and push him towards his mid-20’s when his career formally began. While busking, he often traveled to major cities, including Dublin, Ireland and Boston to perform.
Eventually he was noticed and invited to open for performer Glen Hansard, whom he met while busking in Dublin and kept up with via texting.
Kennedy eventually started up a band named “Shadows and Dust” with three other members during his studies, including Michael Quinn who has remained Dermot’s drummer. The band would later split up in 2015.
Arguably, his big break came in 2018 and 2019 when he began to tour through the US, Australia, and Europe to sold out crowds. Some of these shows included an appearance at the South by Southwest Festival, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and both weekends of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2019.
Listeners took to him instantly and voted him as NPR Slingshot’s “Best New Artist of the Year”, which may have led to him appearing on NPR’s Music Tiny Desk Concert in a 14-minute live acoustic session.
Since then, Kennedy became big enough to warrant completing and releasing his first complete album, Without Fear in late 2019. The album consisted of many of his past works including some that were first written and performed 8 years prior.
Today, Dermot Kennedy is known as a talented rising star and a good-hearted soul who has participated in several philanthropic efforts.
